Import and Export

Encounter+ reads and writes several file formats. This page says what each one is for, and how to move content in and out.

Extension What it is
.module A module — an adventure, compendium or asset pack
.campaign A campaign
.system A game system
.collection A set of content, packed as an archive with its images beside it
.eplus The same content as a single JSON file, with images inlined
.dd2vtt / .uvtt A battle map from another tool, with its walls and lights
.csv Table data
.jpg .png .webp An image, imported as a battle map
.compendium .pack Legacy version 4 XML content — import only

.collection and .eplus carry exactly the same content. The archive keeps images as separate files; the single file inlines them. Use .eplus when you want one file to send someone, and .collection when the images matter on their own.

Settings → Import, then pick a file.

Files are read where they are. Importing never moves or deletes your original, so importing from iCloud Drive or a USB drive is safe.

Two other routes work without opening Settings first:

  • Files app — tap a supported file and it opens in Encounter+.
  • AirDrop — send a file to the device and choose Encounter+.

Both use the same importer.

Settings → Package Manager lists published content — game systems and modules — and installs it directly. Nothing to download by hand.

The Package Manager also tells you when something you have installed has a newer version.

.compendium and .pack archives from version 4 still import.

That content is D&D 5E content, so the D&D 5E system has to be installed first. Without it the import fails rather than guessing where the content belongs. See Upgrading from Version 4.

Settings → Export, then choose what to write out. You can export:

  • a single campaign, as .campaign
  • a single module, as .module
  • a game system, as .system
  • a set of content, as .collection
  • everything, as a set of files

Exported files go wherever you choose in the Files app, or straight into a share sheet.

You can also export one entry at a time from the library — open it and tap Export.

.dd2vtt and .uvtt files come from map-making tools like Dungeondraft. They bring their own walls, lights and grid, so an imported map is ready to play without drawing anything.

Plain images work too — import a .jpg, .png or .webp and you get a map with that image as its background. You then align the grid yourself. See Battle Maps.

All app content sits in Documents, which is visible in the Files app under Encounter+.

You can browse it, copy files out, and back the whole folder up.

Two different things count as a backup, and they protect against different problems:

  • Export writes your content to files you keep. This survives anything, including a lost device, and can be imported into any install.
  • Settings → Advanced → Local Database → Backup copies the app’s database. This is the fast local safety net.

Export before anything destructive — bulk deletes, a system change, or upgrading a device.

Check the extension is one of the ones listed above, and that a game system is installed. For legacy .compendium and .pack files, check that D&D 5E specifically is installed.

Modules and campaigns appear in the library under Content. Everything else is filed into the current campaign. See Campaigns & Modules.

Yes. The current formats are JSON, so a .collection or .eplus file can be edited by hand or generated by a script. See the schema reference.
